The first UDAN Yatri Cafe was launched a couple of months ago, on December 19, 2024, at the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata (formerly Calcutta), on its 100th anniversary. This Cafe is an initiative by the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) and Airports Authority of India (AAI), which aims to bring affordable and quality food options to enhance the travel experience for everyone.
If you're a frequent air traveller, you'd already know how expensive food is at the airports, and this kind of an initiative is certainly appreciable when they provide quality essentials like food and water at affordable prices.
UDAN means "Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik", which essentially means "the common citizen of the country flies", which aims to make air travel affordable for the masses. The Civil Aviation Ministry had announced during the launch of the first UDAN Yatri Cafe that more such cafes would be opened at other airports across India too, based upon its success. The word Yatri means traveller, and the name essentially means Traveller Café or Traveller's Café.

Coming back to the inauguration of the second UDAN Yatri Cafe in India, the Civil Aviation minister Shri Ram Mohan Naidu, at Chennai Airport, told the media that “The UDAN Yatri Cafe is a testament to Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji’s vision of inclusive flying, making air travel more convenient, accessible and affordable for all. Following its successful launch at Kolkata Airport, there has been strong demand from travellers to introduce this facility at other airports. After the eastern gateway of Kolkata, we are proud to bring the UDAN Yatri Cafe to the southern gateway, Chennai Airport which is one of the oldest and now the fifth busiest airport in the country, handling over 22 million passengers annually. We are committed to enhance passenger convenience here and with the Digi Yatra and Trusted Traveller Program E-gates, we are also providing a seamless, end-to-end digital travel experience.”.
He further shared that the 86,135 sq.m. expansion of Terminal 2 is underway to enhance international operations at the airport, along with the progressing refurbishments of Terminals 1 and 4. He also added that a comprehensive traffic flow management system is being implemented for easing city-side congestion.
As part of passenger convenience at the Chennai International Airport, free buggy services is available for senior citizens and pregnant women, childcare rooms, medical facilities and modern lounges are other facilities that it offers the air passengers for a comfortable travel experience.
The Minister also highlighted that the Chennai Airport operates entirely on green energy and it houses a 1.5 MW solar power plant as a part of its commitment to a better environment.
